Chris Becker, director
The Jazz Band at Washington University is comprised of undergraduate students, graduate students, and members of the Washington University community from every discipline and major. The band is a traditional big band, which includes alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, a baritone saxophone, trumpets, trombones, guitar, piano, bass and drums. Auditions for positions in the band are held at the beginning of the fall semester each year. Prior experience playing in a jazz ensemble is helpful, but not required.
The Washington University Jazz Band performs a wide variety of literature for the big band, ranging from swing era favorites to the most contemporary compositions for jazz ensemble. They play two concerts every semester, and appear in area jazz festivals and community events on and off campus as well. The band has been honored by being invited to perform for the Missouri Music Educators Association Annual Conference. In addition, several members of the band have been selected to perform with the Missouri All Collegiate Jazz Ensemble.
