“Singing Soundtracks: Songs in Film”

Department of Music Lecture: Claudia Gorbman, Professor of Film Studies, University of Washington, Tacoma

Abstract: Despite a long critical tradition of film-music scholarship that focuses on composed orchestral scoring, the movies have almost always included song—from the compilation scores of the silent era to song-saturated teen movies of the 1980s and beyond.  This presentation explores some of the ways song and fiction films interact, to demonstrate song's power and versatility in elaborating film narrative.
