Sonic Visions: Jazz and Improvised Music to Avant-Garde Films

In this exciting, one-night event, a jazz trio will perform improvised music to a selection of short experimental films from around the world. The performance will feature two St. Louis musicians (saxophonist Joel Vanderheyden and bassist Paul Steinbeck) with a Chicago-born, New York-based icon (percussionist Thurman Barker). Films by Stan Brakhage, Peter Kubelka, and other legendary avant-garde filmmakers will be shown on rarely-screened 35 millimeter film prints. Sonic Visions will be deeply interactive, with unscripted sounds and expressive images combining to create a one-of-a-kind intermedia experience. Come to Sonic Visions at Washington University in St. Louis on Friday, April 8 at 7pm in the Brown Hall auditorium. Enjoy the performance, and stay for a Q&A with the musicians.
