2015-2016 Friends of Music Concerto Competition Winners

Earlier this month, the Department of Music had our annual Friends of Music Concerto Competition.  We are now pleased to announce the results of this competition.  The winners will each receive a $500 prize and a performance with the orchestra.

Helen Fox, a native of Evansville, IN, began the piano under Virginia Adye when she was three and a half years old. She began the harp at age 11 when her piano teacher introduced her to Dr. Erzsébet Gaál, her first harp instructor. In addition to Dr. Gaál, she has studied with Elzbieta Szmyt, professor of harp at Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and has participated in master classes with Moya Wright and Susann McDonald at Indiana University. She is a freshman in the Undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences, an undecided major with an interest in Art History. Helen is currently studying harp with Megan Stout.

 

Kevin Lou, piano

III. Allegro moderato molto e marcato - Quasi presto - Andante maestoso

 

Kevin Lou is a junior majoring in biochemistry and minoring in writing in the School of Arts & Sciences. He is one of the two winners of the 2015-16 Friends of Music Concerto Competition. Born in Boston and raised in Atlanta, Lou began studying piano at age four and has received numerous accolades, including the C. Merrell Calhoun Piano Prodigy Scholarship. In 2009, 2010, and 2011, Lou received first place at the Georgia Music Teachers Association Auditions. He is currently studying piano with Seth Carlin, professor of music at Washington University in St. Louis.
