Festival Finale - Missouri Chamber Music Festival

Season 8 of the Missouri Chamber Music Festival explores instrumental partnerships from the seemingly disparate to the obviously kindred. From “Duo” which highlights an unusual pairing of vibraphone and cello amidst a like-minded partnering of pianos, to the Festival Finale which is rich with contrasts throughout, each concert of the 2018 Festival displays an unusual musical relationship. Works of MOCM’s featured composer, Martin Bresnick, appear throughout the Festival and showcase the voice of a modern master. We look forward to sharing each of these diverse, carefully curated programs with you!

Inspiration abounds in the Festival Finale. The three composers represented here found musical impetus from different sources. The clarinetist Benny Goodman commissioned Béla Bartók to write his brilliant Contrasts for the unusual combination of violin, clarinet, and piano. Martin Bresnick’s creative exploration of our humanity in And I Always Thought is inspired, in part, by the poet Bertolt Brecht. Using the same instrumentation as Contrasts, the emotional tension of this trio is not soon forgotten. Considered to be one of his highest achievements, Franck’s Piano Quintet was dedicated to, and premiered by, Camille Saint-Saëns.
