Sophia Wetzel is a first year M.A. Music Theory student at Washington University. A native of Arizona, Sophia graduated Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Music in Theory & Composition. While under the direction Kristina Knowles, her recent research consisted of an analysis of the topical use of the genres of rock & roll and the waltz within the Broadway musical Next to Normal and its impact on the audience’s understanding of the narrative. This research has developed into a growing interest in contemporary uses of topic theory and the perception of musical genres. Additionally, Sophia is interested in exploring topics within the fields of pedagogy, popular music, musical theatre, and video game music. In her limited free time, Sophia likes to knit, bake, do puzzles, and play video games.
