Selected Areas for Special Study I: Music, Colonialism, and Empire.

MUSIC 519

This seminar focuses on an important recent turn in music scholarship toward consideration of the roles of colonialism and imperialism in the global history of music. We will address the complex connections between music and practices of post/colonialism, globalization, appropriation, and political and economic power. Assuming capacious definitions of "empire," "nation," and "music" will allow us to examine the changing history of these categories and enable us to explore a wide variety of musical genres and traditions from the early modern period to the present. This seminar will center on close reading of classic works and new research in ethno/musicology and cultural studies and will culminate with research papers that allow participants to explore issues relevant to their own topics of interest. Graduate students from relevant departments outside of Music are welcome.
