For more than half a century, Anthony Braxton, born in Chicago in 1945, has played a key role in contemporary music as a composer, multi-instrumentalist, music theorist, teacher, mentor, and visionary. Inspired by jazz, European art music, and global musical traditions, Braxton calls his work "Creative Music."
This book presents the contributions to the first international conference devoted exclusively to the life and work of Anthony Braxton, which took place from August 8–9, 2023, as part of the Darmstadt Summer Course. The conference is documented through work analyses, discussions, and an interview with Anthony Braxton by George E. Lewis.

In addition to the book, a companion CD with live recordings of two performances during the 2023 Darmstadt Summer Course has been released. The CD Anthony Braxton: 2 comp (2023) includes the world premiere of Thunder Music on August 7 and the performance of the Creative Orchestra Workshop conducted by Braxton on August 15.
