Fang is pursuing a doctorate degree in musicology. Her research interests focus on the intersection of critical racial theory and music. She is particularly interested in how pop music participates in racial equity and social justice.

As an active erhu player, Fang has performed as a soloist and with various orchestras in the United States and China. She enjoys playing the erhu with musicians from different cultures. In addition, Fang participated in several world music ensembles, including Ghana’s Ewe drumming, the Steel Band, and the Taiko drumming ensemble. Playing music is the most crucial part of her life.
