Ryan Wahidi, bass, and Yihan Li, piano, win the 2016-17 Friends of Music Concerto Competition

Ryan Wahidi is a sophomore studying physics in the College of Arts and Sciences. A Creve Coeur, MO, native, Ryan has been playing the double bass for 6 years. He has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America for their 2015 and 2016 seasons, performing at Carnegie Hall twice and touring China and Europe under the batons of Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, and Valery Gergiev while also accompanying pianists Emmanuel Ax, Denis Matsuev, and YUNDI. He was also a member of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra for 3 years, and performed with ASTA’s National High School Honors Orchestra as principal bassist. Currently, Ryan is a member of the WUSTL Symphony Orchestra and chamber ensembles. In his spare time he plays the cello, accompanied by Mary Sutherland, at the Siteman Cancer Center.

Ryan will perform with the WUSTL Symphony Orchestra on March 3, 2017.

Yihan Li is a junior majoring in Biochemistry and Music. She began playing piano at age five and has studied under Carol Cook and Yifan Liu. In middle school, she qualified for the Sigma Alpha Iota Honors Recital in all three years of eligibility. She played in the annual National Piano Guild Auditions from 2009-2011 and received the title of “National Member”. In 2011, she received first place at the Kansas Music Teachers Association competition. 

Yihan is currently studying piano with Annette Burkhart, Teacher of Applied Music at Washington University. Yihan will perform with the WUSTL Symphony Orchestra on April 21, 2017.
