Elementary Technique of Electronic Music: Synth Lab

MUSIC 401

A deep dive into the world of synthesis, using the collection of legendary analog synthesizers in the Electronic Music Studio as our laboratory (Arp 2500 and 2600, Moog Modular, Buchla 200). We'll combine three modes of inquiry. First, we'll use simple programming assignments in both Max/MSP to wrap our heads around how complex sounds can be constructed from simple combinations of waveforms, filters, and envelopes. Second, we'll translate that theoretical knowledge into a creative toolkit, composing short pieces that explore the unique sounds of both the vintage synths as well as a few new instruments (Synderphonics Vocodec, Eurorack Modular). Third, we'll immerse ourselves in the novel musical forms made possible by these sounds, listening to and analyzing the the music of pioneering composers like Pauline Oliveros, Laurie Spiegel, Éliane Radigue, Laurie Anderson, and Holly Herndon.
