Speak: From Syria to Harlem, this program combines the spoken word and chamber music. In the first work on this program, we jump into the nights of Harlem where African-American composer, Valerie Coleman, brings the words of Langston Hughes to life with electric rhythms influenced by jazz. Also influenced by jazz, Stravinsky's trio arrangement of his legendary A Soldier's Tale warns of making deals with the devil. With Syrian-American Roustom's telling of an Arabic folk tale set to music, we hear the influences of traditional sounds of Lebanon, Palestine and Syria woven into a sweeping story of love, loss and faith.
