Wind Ensemble Concert - "Inspiration"

The Wind Ensemble Concert will feature works by Gould, Maslanka, Sheldon, and Gabrieli. In programming Ballad for Band by Morton Gould, the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth is being honored. Gould, best known for American Salute, was a prolific composer whose writing is steeped in jazz, blues, and folk music.

The other works featured on the performance reflect medieval and renaissance influence.  Prelude on a Gregorian Tune, by David Maslanka, uses a Gregorian chant as inspiration. Gabrieli's Sonata and Canzona were composed for double brass choirs and performed in St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice around 1600.  Robert Sheldon took inspiration from the renaissance painting style known as "chiaroscuro" for his work by that name.
