Cortango

A tango dance band featuring members of the St. Louis Symphony

This event is part of the Danforth University Center - Chamber Series.

Featuring Cally Banham, Cor anglais and oboe; Asaki Kuboki, violin; David DeRiso, bass; Adam Maness, piano and guitar.

Cortango, a tango ensemble with a symphonic twist, is a concert and dance band made up of members of the St. Louis Symphony. Founded and led by Cally, a trained social Tango dancer, Cortango specializes in popular classics from the beloved orchestra leaders of Tango's golden era. Cortango is named for the "Cor anglais", or "English horn" - the atypical instrument in this otherwise orquesta tipica! The songbook of Cortango comes in part from adaptations and transcriptions made by the band, and from a number of original commissions by Argentine bandoneon player and arranger, Julian Hasse. Cortango was born from a desire to create a live music experience which would be ideal for social dancers, and has since evolved to become a concert ensemble also, exploring the repertoire of contemporary Tango. The band debuted at the St. Louis Ritz-Carlton's "Nuestra Milonga" in May 2013. Cortango sometimes expands to feature guest colleagues from the St. Louis Symphony. 2013 engagements included a New York Debut at Cary Hall, and a Festival debut performance at the Midwest Tango Festival. Cortango is looking forward to its first recording project, scheduled for June 2015.
