This lecture offers an introduction to and context for music that will be featured on the upcoming concert, “Le Devenir des Sons: An Evening of French Spectral Music” (Monday, February 11th). Pieces discussed include Gérard Grisey’s Prologue and Vortex Temporum I, Tristan Murail’s Winter Fragments, and Jonathan Harvey’s Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco.

Joseph R Jakubowski is a PhD candidate in Music Theory at Washington University, having previously completed a Masters of Music at Northern Arizona University and a Bachelor’s of Music at the University of Minnesota. His work examines the perception and cognition of musical time and form, with a focus on music of the last sixty years. Joseph’s article on entrainment and communication in the music of Grisey appears in the journal Music Theory Online. He has presented research on topics such as meter, embodiment, and musical narratives in the US, Canada, and the UK, and this June he will give a paper on intertextuality and spectral music in Paris.
