Music History I: Music in Europe from the Earliest Notation to 1700

The role of music as it relates to European devotion, socio-political movements, and leisure in the medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque periods. Topics covered include the technologies of music notation and transmission, music for Catholic and Protestant church services, the invention of opera and instrumental music, and issues of performance and performance practice. Class meetings will involve listening to, analyzing, and discussing musical scores and placing them in historical context. PREREQ: Music 121 or permission of instructor.
